Yuri Baturin’s plenary report “Digital Earth as a technical substrate of the Noosphere”

On September 20, 2023, the traditional session “Digital Earth and Big Data” of the Graphicon conference was held in Moscow for the seventh time. This year discussion was inspired by the position paper “Digital Earth: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow”, which contains an updated Digital Earth Vision 2030 and has become the cornerstone of strengthening the scientific sovereignty of the Digital Earth. The discussion of the new scientific situation and new opportunities for the development of the Digital Earth took a central place at the conference.

The 13th International Symposium on Digital Earth successfully held in Greece

From 11th to 14th July 2023, the 13th International Symposium on Digital Earth was successfully held in Athens, Greece. The Symposium was hosted by the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE) and was organized by the Harokopio University of Athens. With the theme of “Earth Intelligence to Understand and Protect Our Living Planet”, the symposium attracted around 200 participants from 24 countries including China, Greece, Australia, Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, the United States, etc.

Digital Earth was presented on Globalistics-2023

On April 17, 2023 at Lomonosov Moscow State University the Seventh International Scientific Congress “Globalism-2023: Sustainable Development in the Context of Global Processes”, dedicated to the 160th anniversary of Vernadsky, began its work. The session “Turning from socio-technogenic to socio-biospheric development of life and the world”, held on 25 April online, presented a report by Eugene Eremchenko (Moscow State University, Moscow) and Irina Angelina (DonNUET, Donetsk) “Globalism and Geocentrism: a new trend of management and a slot of opportunity for Russia”.

Digital Earth presented at the Philosophy Department of Lomonosov Moscow State University

On April 18, 2023, a special volume of the journal Logos dedicated to the critical study of cartography was presented at the Faculty of Philosophy of Moscow State University. The presentation of the volume “Studies in Cartography” of the leading Russian philosophical journal Logos was widely announced both at Lomonosov Moscow State University, in Russia, and abroad, which characterizes the degree of general interest in the main theme of the issue – how and to what extent maps represent objective reality.

On the Inside of Maps: Digital Earth Vision

The Russian Chapter of the International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE) took part in an important outreach project – a critical study of cartography, carried out by the leading Russian philosophical and literary journal “Logos”. A special issue of the journal, entitled “Research on Cartography»” (Logos, 2023, Vol. 33, No. 1), gathered together works by Russian and foreign authors devoted to the nature of maps and their internal transformation in an era of the Digital Earth as a new approach to the representation of external reality. Criticism suggests a crisis; the study aimed to outline the problem and identify the reasons behind the increasingly apparent inadequacy of maps to solve the task of objectively representing real space.

3rd ISDE International Lectures

ISDE New 2023 Year’s Message

2022 has been an important and fruitful year for ISDE despite many unforeseen events that have created instability in our world. COVID-19, a new type of global threat has affected our society in various ways: this pandemic has exposed the fragility of the modern world and its exceptional vulnerability, accelerating the virtualization of society. The Ukraine-Russia crisis has created economic, environmental and social instability with serious consequences for our planet and in particular by reducing the «collaborative» attention towards sustainable development goals. About twenty years later, the concept of Digital Earth remains as relevant as ever. ISDE witnessed the important advances in technology and became aware of the new challenges and opportunities for Digital Earth.
